Donkeys and peacocks and ducks – oh my! If Old Macdonald had a farm, I bet it would look a lot like the
Horseshoe Bend Farm in Keilor, just 20 minutes away from Melbourne's CBD.
It's actually a little hard to believe this quaint little farm exists here in what is essentially a residential area with monstrous industrial developments in surrounding suburbs.
Horseshoe Bend Farm is a popular destination for young families, playgroups and primary schools. Not only is there much to do, but everything is educational. Guided tours are available (don't forget to book) and kids will love to get up close and personal with the animals. Inquisitive young minds and budding explorers will relish getting their hands dirty while they inspect and climb on farming equipment.
Aside from that, there's a charming original 1930s cottage complete with tearooms and gardens, and a picnic area with full amenities. If you're keen on fitness and sightseeing, throw on your walking shoes and follow the 2km Wetland Circuit walking track which runs along the edge of the
Maribyrnong River.
The Farm is open daily from 10am-4pm, and Open Days are held on the 3rd Sunday of every month and include pony rides and a craft market where you'll be sure to pick up some arty fare or a homemade treat. Entry is free.
Tip: Gumboots are a good idea for little ones. While they'll no doubt have a ball as they trudge through the mud, mums and dads, you won't be too keen to clean up afterward.
