If you thought it wasn't possible to go horseback riding in the middle of New York City, you'll be pleased to know that there are several horse stables close to the City itself that offers horseback riding. Some of them also offer lessons, so if you want to learn how to ride horses for show purposes or just so that you'll get the maximum enjoyment out of the experience, you can do that.

Riverdale Equestrian Program

The Riverdale Equestrian Program, located in Van Cordtland Park at West 254th Street and Broadway in Riverdale, NY (The Bronx), offers riding lessons to individuals wishing to become more proficient riders. Adult and youth lessons are available, in one-half and one hour private sessions (for anyone, no matter what their riding skill is), or one-half and one hour semi-private sessions for advanced riders only.

Riverdale Equestrian Program also offers an after-school program which provides lessons and leisure riding opportunities. It's a great way to help your child unwind after a long day of studying.

Kensington Stables

Kensington Stables is located at 51 Caton Place in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. Although the Park has seen over 100 years come and go, with the changes that come with the passing of time, the park still remains the last place in Brooklyn that you can find native forest woodland areas and the only freshwater lake in Brooklyn.

You can enjoy the beauty of Prospect Park by riding along the 3.5 mile trail that is operated and maintained by Kensington Stables. You don't have to be an experienced rider to go on a trail ride; the horses will go no faster than a trot.

Keep your eyes open as you ride the trails. You never know what kinds of birds or other wildlife you might see.

Horseback riding offered by the New York Department of Parks

You can find riding stables in all of the boroughs except for Manhattan. In addition, you can find several places on Staten Island that offer horseback riding. This is a great way to leave the "big city" for a while and explore other parts of New York City.

You may be surprised to see that there are still a lot of natural areas in and around the City, so you want to make sure that they'll be kept clean and unspoiled for others to enjoy. This means staying on the trails when you are horseback riding, and taking care not to litter.

The New York Department of Parks can give you more information on horseback riding opportunities in the other boroughs, Staten Island, and surrounding areas. You can log on to the website listed below.

I know people who swear by horseback riding, especially for kids. There is a symbiosis almost of nature and animal and rider. Even if the horses are plodding up a trail on their own, it's a great experience. But actually learning how to work alongside a horse, is just brilliant.

Thankyou, if I ever get to New York, that would be something I woud love to do. Are these riding places in countrified areas or city areas? I have no idea, being in Australia. Here, we have a few riding places, generally out of the city locations, so you get to take in the local country or beach views.
