Holbrook is a small town in southern NSW situated between Melbourne and Sydney. It is approximately 380km or a bit over 4 hours drive from Melbourne.
The town is best known as the Submarine Town as it is home to the decommissioned submarine the HMAS Otway which was the second of six submarines built for the Royal Australian Navy in Scotland. It was launched in 1966 and commissioned in 1968.

The imposing 89 metre long submarine is situated in a park just off the Hume Highway and makes a great stop to get out and stretch your legs whilst driving to Sydney.

The submarine was decommissioned in 1995 and after the donation of the fin of the submarine, a group of residents got together to form a working group to raise funds and investigate ways to bring the submarine to the town as a memorial to the Australians who were submariners.

After a lost tender bid, the group received a donation that enabled them to successfully bring the submarine to the town and make their vision reality.

The process involved cutting the submarine into sections and it being transported to the town in 1996 where it was then put together by a team of unemployed trainees who were part of a community work program. [BREAK]

The submarine is an impressive sight as you come into the town being in such an inland environment.
The submarine can be viewed from every angle where you can get a full appreciation of its size though it is hard to fully comprehend it was home to 64 men when it was in use.

Adjoining the submarine is the museum which is open from 10am till 4pm daily with the exception of Christmas Day and ANZAC Day (open half the day). Information regarding the museum and history of the HMAS Otway can be found here.

During your stop you can also grab a coffee, snack or light meal at the cafe whilst sitting outside under a shade sail.
