A true story of love, loyalty and cultural revolution
What would you sacrifice to pursue talent, to chase dreams or for the love of your family?
Told from the perspective of a young man caught between two very different worlds and cultures, His Mother's Voice is the true story of a young Chinese boy who is secretly taught to play the piano by his mother in defiance of Communist Party laws in 1966 Shanghai.
Strong performances by Isaiah Powell playing Little Liu and Little Bo
The story follows the personal journey of key individuals struggling to balance their respective loves and loyalties around events that ultimately lead to significant confrontation between Shanghai and Canberra.
Spanning the period from China's Cultural Revolution to the eve of the Tiananmen Square protests, His Mother's Voice sensitively portrays the relationship between a young couple from different cultures, the love and sacrifice of a mother for her son and the loyalty of a young man for his country. As the story unfolds, we learn of the personal cost of this revolution and the contradictions and unjust ideologies underpinning these events.
Harry Tseng as Qian Liu and Dannielle Jackson as Emma Fielding, together with the entire cast, mesmerise the audience
An amazing cast and outstanding production team delivers a first class world premiere performance that does justice to Australian playwright Justin Fleming's remarkable play. At the end of the play, the audience is left with a true sense of what it means to grow up, stretch your wings and to be true to yourself in the face of overwhelming odds.
The cast draws the audience into their world and the story
With the revolutionary and cultural disturbances we are exposed to each week on the news, we become desensitized to the personal impact of political and cultural turmoil on individuals' lives. This story truly touches the heart of the audience, reminding us of the bravery and sacrifice made by individuals and their quiet heroism which is often unnoticed and unsung.
