Dainty tea-ware, finger sandwiches and miniature cupcakes are a familiar sight in the high tea culture. The High Tea Society, a team of ladies fond of the tea, have dedicated their time and efforts into finding some of the highest teas around Australia.
Sydney is no stranger to the old English custom with established tea rooms sprinkled all over the city for a girl to spend poetic weekday afternoons nibbling miniature cakes and pastries over her a classic read of Pride and Prejudice.
The High Tea Society is a wonderful source for anybody wanting to try out the high tea culture. The website features ideas and tips on how to throw a high tea party, recipes of finger food, and even a full listing of all the classic high tea venues around Australia. There is even an entire section on a lady's acceptable high tea attire.
One of the more popular high tea venues in Sydney is
The Victoria Room. With plush armchairs, luxurious carpets and ornate decorations that bathe the restaurant in its colonial light, the experience begins the very moment you step in. The venue serves a classic high tea for $38 on Saturday from 12noon to 5pm and on Sundays from 1pm to 5pm. Reservations for high tea at The Victoria Room need to be made well in advance as it gets booked up very quickly. Take a little bit of high tea home with you with the Victoria Room's very own coffee table book.
The other well known tea room is in fact called,
The Tea Room. With two locations, QVB and Georges Heights, The Tea Room serves its signature morning tea at 11am to 12noon on weekdays and 10am to 12noon on weekends. They also serve afternoon tea that goes on from 11am. Similar to high tea venues, The Tea Room features the same level of opulence and resplendence that allows a lady to spend her afternoon in indulgence.
Finally, the people at
The Loft has swerved away from its usual zone and jumped into trying out a high tea, and they seem to have gotten it right. On weekends from 12noon to 3pm, guests can try the traditional high tea platter for $35.
