The aroma of the pies were irresistible. Chunky beef pies, curry pies, mushroom pies, chilli pies. Lots of varieties using French style butter puff pastry. The piece de resistance for me was the wonderful apple pie – but more on this flavoursome treat later.

To encourage our teens to remove themselves from computers and iPods, pies and milkshakes were used as a tempting bribe. We drove to our favourite pie place, Pie In The Sky , a roadhouse at beautiful Bilpin. We have visited this lovely shop many times over the years, and it has never failed to impress with the tastiest pies around.

I always come away from this shop with their family-sized apple pie, for $12. I've been known to buy at least four to distribute around the extended family. My elderly mother has baked numerous delicious apple pies over the years. She would make her own pastry, crimp the edges, create patterns from leftover pastry, and decorate the tops of her apple pies. When I present her with one of the Pie In The Sky apple pies, she always comments that they are wonderfully moist and tasty – with or without icecream.

We all ordered the same drink – thick, creamy strawberry milkshakes, in old-fashioned metal drinking containers. We've had them before, so we know from experience, these are yummy. Not one to waste a good milkshake, I dug into the bottom of my shake with a spoon to retrieve the last of the thick froth.

Though Pie In The Sky has a large range of pies, it also offers Devonshire tea, and other cakes and slices. The staff are very friendly and professional, and always have a smile on their faces.

The Kurrajong Heights/Bilpin area is a lovely rural area. Some of the trees were transforming into beautiful orange and gold autumnal colours. If you drive along the Bells Line of Road to Bilpin, put the car windows down. The bell-birds literally sound like chimes ringing in the gorgeous bushland, as the road winds around towards pie heaven. About five minutes from Pie In The Sky, there is Rotary Lookout at Kurrajong Heights. On a clear day, there are views all the way to Sydney. So go for a day trip or make a weekend of it. There are many places to stay in the area.
