It is January and even though this post may seem like a forced and unwanted morsel of that oaty stuff your mother made you eat after a month of turkey, egg nog and apple pie, pinch your nose and take a deep breath.

For me especially, 2010's Christmas and New Year have been a spectrum of sensations from hedonism to torment. Drowned in buckets of Grey Goose, Kahlua and Baileys, my weighing scale blushes on my behalf. In an effort to seek restitution, I have compiled a list of excellent health food stores in the Sydney Central locality that offer basic detoxification necessities and sound advice.

Wholesome (Broadway)
I love this place, period. I walk by Wholesome everyday on the way to the university and I am always tempted to pop in for some organic bulgur wheat or very unnecessary macrobiotic sea salt. On a more serious note, Wholesome are the real deal. The store is comfortably large with ample space to roam around and examine the products, the variety is admirable and they even have a Naturopath who is in on certain days. Wholesome prefers it if you give them a call for their clinical visits at 02 9211 1171, but feel free to walk into the store anytime. The only thing I did not particularly enjoy is the obvious lack of customer service to the health food novice such as myself.
Wholesome is located in Broadway.

Honest to Goodness
Yes, yes that is their name. Honest to Goodness is an online organic health food store that delivers groceries to your doorstep regardless of your locality. The range is not bad, and they seem to stock the rare organic raw virgin coconut oil and a range of impressive biodynamic products from dried apple to brown rice. My favorite section is the 'Lunch Box Treats' that stocks a variety of trail mix and date and coconut rolls, which are definitely excellent substitutes for a Rice Krispies bar. Honest to Goodness deliver everywhere in Australia and their shipping rates are reasonable.

Jones the Grocer
Jones is more of a gourmet store, but has a series of organic and gluten free options for its customers. I have a personal affection for this store mainly because of its fantastical fromagerie that boasts everything from Boursin to Brin. Jones' specialty is also its array of chutneys, sauces and cookies in packaging that reminded me of homemade preserves. Beware, for it is easy to get lost in the maze of jars and miniature meringue packets. Be sure to try out the cafe, as they have some excellent and palatable choices for the health conscious individual.
Jones the Grocer is located in Woollahra.
