Harvest Festival 2013 - Sydney [Cancelled]

Harvest 2012 ended with Sigur Rós playing what is perhaps the best festival set I've ever witnessed. So needless to say I've been eagerly anticipating the release of the Harvest 2013 line-up ever since.

Of course, prior to the announcement I did a stupid thing. Instead of just waiting patiently for the line-up to be announced, I got my hopes up incredibly high. I imagined absolutely every band I wanted to see live and assumed they were sure things. It's fair to say I've been left underwhelmed by perfectly good festivals in the past because of my unrealistic expectations. But Harvest proved to be an exception. Even though only a few of the bands I'd hoped for will appear, it's a testament to its quality that it still leaves me excited for November.

Harvest 2013 features an assortment of fantastic bands and Franz Ferdinand. As usual, the line-up is made up of current indie-rock and hipster approved 90's alternative. Like Soundwave, Harvest's line-ups sometimes feel like they would have been better suited to the late 90's/early 00's. But whereas Soundwave often feeds off your fading nostalgia for bands you could have only gotten into as a fifteen year old, the bands at Harvest would still be as loved if they formed this year.

This year's line-up features the long awaited return of British Trip-Hop band Massive Attack in a headline slot which has the potential to surpass Sigur Rós's performance. Beneath them on the line-up are Crazy funk-rockers Primus, who last visited Australia in 2011 when they gave the best performance of the day at Soundwave, and Franz Ferdinand who, despite my personal indifference to them, will no doubt get a massive crowd singing along to hits such as "No You Girls" and "Ulysses". Other acts include electronic duo Goldfrapp, alt-rockers Eeels, Melbourne legends The Drones, early 2000's rockers Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and the "Him" in "She & Him", M. Ward.

But impressive as this announcement may be, the best part has been known since last month. Suburban indie fans around the world shrieked in joy when it was announced that Neutral Milk Hotel were reuniting with the In the Aeroplane Over the Sea lineup for a serious of shows around North America and Europe. Despite the promoter's best effort to keep it a secret (he claimed he couldn't book them as their "Australian shows were booked months ago"), they announced themselves when listing their tour dates. Held up as one of the greatest lo-fi indie-rock albums of all time, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea features songs perfect for a laid back festival such as Harvest. Some of the lyrics might be absurd, but hearing a crowd of indie fans sing along to songs like "King of Carrot Flowers" and "Two-Headed Boy" is something that can't be missed.

This year's Sydney show will take place at the Domain instead of Parramatta Park. Such a change might feel like a downgrade, especially considering the difference in size. But the Homeback and Sydney Festival have proved that the Domain is perfectly capable of hosting a music festival. We just have to hope that the low density that made the last Harvests great remains intact.
