When my dog died two years ago I spent a lot of time checking the RSPCA and Animal Welfare websites for a suitable replacement to keep his sister company. Despite regular visits to the shelters I couldn't find a compatible young male dog, until a friend mentioned that he had heard of a shelter at Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills.

On my first trip to the not-for-profit , I fell for a 6 month old male pup to keep my elderly female dog company. I was concerned that she may not adapt well to living with a pup, but all turned out well and both dogs were much happier after they met. (Fortunately the Hahndorf Shelter has a generous returns policy if things don't turn out with your new pet).

After taking Max to the inexpensive SA Dog Obedience classes he was a delight to own - well socialised, obedient and happy. I sometimes think that pound dogs can turn out better adjusted than pedigree dogs, and Max has become a fantastic friendly pet. For tips about how to have a well behaved and happy dog, see this article .

The looks after both abandoned dogs and cats, and is the official pound for the Mount Barker and Adelaide Hills Councils but is not funded by government. It has a no kill policy, meaning that animals are never put down solely because they are unwanted. But that does put a huge strain on the shelter's financial and volunteer resources, as help is needed to exercise dogs, clean cages, feed all the animals, and transport them to and from vet appointments.

Donations from the public are very welcome - money, canned and dry food, fresh bones, kitty litter, blankets and towels, toys and treats are all gratefully accepted. One of the shelter's main fundraisers is its calendar, with six dog and six cat stories including photos and on sale at many locations for just $5.

in the Adelaide Hills always has animals looking for a good home, and sadly the shelter never empties. Lucy, their longest term resident dog at the moment has lived there eight months, but the shelter keeps supporting her until the right owner comes along.

The list of available animals changes constantly - check their website regularly to see what is new. All animals are desexed, vaccinated and micro-chipped for their own health and safety.

If you're thinking of getting a new cat or dog, why not consider an animal from the Hahndorf Animal Shelter? They make terrific pets and are not exorbitantly expensive like pedigree dogs. Why buy an animal from a pet shop making a profit when you can save these abandoned dogs and cats?

These animals need your help, and will reward you with years of loving. Will you help them?
