Hadron Collider: Step Inside the World's Greatest Experiment 'a bold endeavour to bring fundamental physics to the people… in many ways it's better than the real thing [visiting CERN]' The Independent'It's impressive that everything is both visually striking (pretty, even) and yet informative, and the Science Museum should be very pleased with Collider.' New Statesman'refreshingly grown-up' BBC Radio 4 'PM' programme'There is more to the show than the science, however. The museum pulled off the even harder trick of depicting CERN's character.' The Economist

The ticket person was happy."We thought, just after Christmas, that there would be a lull. How wrong can you be?"

As we looked around us, we could see a happy buzz, with a high percentage of parents and children, eager to learn about "the biggest science experiment ever".

Can I make a gentle suggestion.

If you are a parent to whom particle science is something of a mystery, visit the New York Times "Cern for Dummies" site before you go and your children will be astonished at how much you know.

And another site which might be useful is the Google Street View tour of Cern.

Because my guess is that your children will be excited about the idea of this exhibition and that they will be thrilled by it.

Starting with the delightfully nerdy and luminously clear video presentation before you enter the exhibition.

Watch for a guest appearance from Professor Brian Cox.

Created by London's Science Museum, and at the end of a world tour, this exhibition has been getting deservedly rave reviews, for its quirky presentation of the science and the scientists of Cern.

Queensland Museum CEO, Professor Suzanne Miller, says the exhibition is about "big science" and the people behind it."The discovery of the Higgs boson, the God particle, has really caught people's imaginations," Miller says."And people seem to know about the Large Hadron Collider. We will be the last venue worldwide to show the exhibition which will run though until next year's World Science Festival."

One of the amazing things about Cern is that it was ever built.

Costing billions of dollars to create and run it runs for 27 kilometres under France and Switzerland, and over 10,000 people are involved in trying to understand the fundamental building blocks of the universe.

Blending video, sound, theatre and actual artefacts this is a fascinating, engaging and sophisticated introduction to another world.

As Alexander Hayward of the Queensland Museum says "It's an exciting place to be because they are working to understand the fundamental particles from which all matter is made,"
"They are asking the big questions such as - where do we come from, what are we made of and where did it all begin?"

Yes, children will love it, but so will grand-parents.

This is a celebration of pure science and generates an infectious enthusiasm for the search for knowledge for its own sake.

This exhibition should not be missed.
