The group originally began with a small group of people who were interested in the topic of Food Security. Food Security can be described as "people having availability and access at all times to sufficient, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life"
For the last 3years the group has received a grant from the Unley Council. Initially the grant was used to provide gardening/food kits to people in need. The initiative has now developed into free gardening workshops which are run 6 to 8 times a year. Topics for the workshops include container gardening, pruning fruit trees, creating a garden in small spaces, preserving produce, drying, pickling. Cooking, turning simple ingredients into meals.
The group has together with the community established verge herb and vegetable gardens. If you live in the City of Unley Council area you may have seen some verge gardens growing.
The topic for the 1st gardening workshop for 2016 is 'How did your garden grow this summer' the workshop is free and afternoon tea is provided.
On Sunday 6 March 2016 at the Unley Community Centre, 18 Arthur Street, Unley.
You will need to register to attend this workshop at
[email protected] or 0401 122 547.
The workshop will cover 'How did your garden grow this summer', What worked? What didn't? Bring along samples of produce that grew well. If you have any excess produce you can share, bring it to the workshop. Come along even if you haven't started a vegetable/herb garden but would like to.
