One of London’s rich abundance of markets,
Greenwich Market offers everything from delectable world foods to antiques and unusual arts and crafts.
Smaller by comparison with the likes of Broadway and Portobello markets, Greenwich Market provides an understated alternative – an amiable hour or so genially meandering between stalls should do the trick.
Open Wednesday through until Sunday, and nestled inside a square just off Nelson road, navigate your way through the busy bustle via one of the four entrances and just follow your nose - the wafting aroma of international cuisine should do the rest. From Kenya to Mexico, via Japan and Turkey - amongst others – it’s a foodie’s dream.
If you’re hungry, you might plump for the fresh Salmon teriyaki or the toppling burritos, but if you’re there to buy for later, sample a profusion of fresh cheeses, bread and olives, or treat yourself to the devilishly indulgent home baked cakes and brownies. But it’s not all strictly culinary.
With food in hand you’ll feel the urge to wander around the clothes stalls doing a neat line in boho-chic or admire the exquisitely crafted chessboards and jewellery boxes. Should you feel particularly inspired; the range of paintings, sculptures and carvings will also capture the imagination. If the market gets comfortably cramped – which it regularly does – duck into the quaint, side buildings, including traditional sweet and toy shops for a bit of sentimentality.
A mere 20 minutes from Central London,
Greenwich Market is well serviced by tube, DLR and bus links. And depending on what mood takes you, the market is within striking distance of the rather lovely Greenwich Park and Observatory, and a multitude of pubs overlooking the Thames.
