What is it about the paintings of the Impressionists that so captivates people? Impressionism is arguably the most well-loved art movement, and its paintings with their colour, light, vibrancy, and atmosphere have resonated with people the world over since 1874. A major exhibition of the work of one of Impressionism's founding fathers and the inspiration behind many of his paintings opens on 10 May at NGV International with Monet's Garden and there's a special treat in store for those who like their artistic experiences to extend beyond the paintings. Welcome to The Great Hall High Tea on the second Sunday of each month during the exhibition..

[ADVERT]The Venue

The Great Hall High Teas will combine all the qualities of a Monet painting with the grandeur of the Great Hall and its soaring, vibrant stained glass ceiling. Commissioned in 1961 and completed in 1967 by Australian artist, Leonard French, the ceiling is the largest of its kind in the world.

The Setting

The Great Hall High Teas will feature tables decorated with Monet inspired floral tablecloths and large scale centrepieces that will reflect the floral abundance of the changing seasons. You can imagine you're in Monet's garden at Giverny while you enjoy delectable finger food and musical entertainment.

The Menu

You will feast on chicken sausage rolls, roasted vegetable tarts with parmesan and a selection of dainty and delectable sandwiches. But it's the sweet treats that fully reflect the French influence. How about pain au chocolat (chocolate croissants), scones with jam and cream, macaron au fraise (strawberry macaroons), canele de Bordeaux (caramelised French cakes), tart au citron (lemon tart), gateau a l'orange (orange cake) and mousse au praline d'amande (almond praline mousse). They all sound, and probably taste, better in French. Who knows? These may be some of the dainty morsels that Monet himself indulged in as he took tea in his tranquil retreat.

The Entertainment

DJ Scott Thompson will play some of the typical songs of France to get you in the mood for this French culinary experience.
