Okay, I'll be the first to admit that the Gourmet Dumpling Restaurant doesn't look like much. In fact I must have walked by it a million times before ever considering going in. We eventually decided to eat there only after it was explicitly recommended by a friend of mine.
The small restaurant at first looks at odds within the up market location of Glenferrie road, and I confess I was apprehensive about eating there. The décor is simple to say the least with the bare minimum in furniture and atmosphere. Instead of water at the table, they serve you tea which usually is kind of underwhelming but here was quite refreshing.
Playing it safe we ordered the chicken and pork dumplings, spring rolls, and the pork buns. The food came out astonishingly fast which was great because we were both famished at the time.
The spring rolls and pork buns were delicious but the chicken and pork dumplings were out of this world, and have now become one of my favourite foods. To top it all off, a serve of dumplings is usually priced around the $8.50 mark and you get a very good helping.
For a penniless student this restaurant has fast become a paradise.
Just a tip though, the food may be served quickly but it is also very, very, very, super duper hot, so be patient unless you want third degree burns on your tongue (like me).
