UPDATE 9/2: PLEASE NOTE THIS VENUE IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED AND NO LONGER TRADING

If you have visited the Sun Theatre in Yarraville then you might have walked by nestled in the Old Post Office right next door to the cinemas. Having chanced upon it recently I persuaded my (usually-resistant-to-shopping) bloke to step in and have a look.

I expected the usual gift shop range of tea towels and other ordinary kitchen goods. I couldn't have been more wrong (OK they do have tea towels, but special ones).

's philosophy is all about "useful presents", ones that look good, work well and last a long time. For us the store became an outing in itself as we discovered the quirky, the beautiful, the weird, the dazzling and the ingenious. So many adjectives before I even got to useful.

Here's a small sample of the offerings:

Feeling like we were five-year-olds in a toy store, we were constantly calling each other over to marvel over this gadget or that amazingly clever idea. Some of the items simply caused us to laugh with delight at their brilliance or quirkiness. To complete the experience, we were offered healthy green soursop tea to sip while we browsed.

Along with the original store in Perth, also sells online. Marshall Martin, former ABC Broadcaster and founder of , having noticed that large quantities of products were being shipped to Seddon and Yarraville, decided to come over and have a look. That was the beginning of the Yarraville store. Read more of his story here .

If you're having trouble buying the perfect gift for someone then the myriad array of gifts at is likely to deliver a solution. Yes there are kitchen goods and also toys, wallets, sunglasses, games, grooming aids, food, musical instruments, travel goods, kid paraphernalia, computer accessories and more. There are high end designer products, hand crafted pieces, some nostalgic reproduction items and some that are just plain fun.

Prices range from $4 to $400 with heaps of choices around the $20-$40 mark. Along with the free tea, there's also free gift wrapping. The store is architect designed, has wide aisles and is pram and dog friendly. There are seats out the front where you can sit and admire your purchases or just watch the world go by. Yarraville Village itself boasts multiple cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants if you get hungry or thirsty and you can always catch a movie while you're there.

. Cool gifts, happy staff, welcoming atmosphere and of course, a fine cup of tea.

Getting There:

By car Yarraville is a short hop from the first exit on the western side of the Westgate Bridge. Yarraville Railway Station can be accessed via the Werribee and Williamstown lines. There are also buses, see PTV to plan your journey.
