A campfire and sleeping in a tent alongside one of South Australia's natural wonders is the dream for many. Yet too often we make excuses as to why not – too hard, too cool and too uncomfortable, just a name a few. But not for much longer, as the Wilpena Pound Resort has other ideas.

Keen to overcome the challenges and desirous of more visitors to this natural wonderland the Wilpena Pound Resort has erected 15 Safari Tents in the northwestern corner of the campgrounds. All Safari Tents are self-contained, and are a sufficient distance apart from each other so that the noises that one often hears from tents in campgrounds is unrecognisable.

Each Safari Tent contains a king size bed (or two singles), comfortable chairs, a reverse cycle airconditioner, small fridge and some enticing tea/coffee facilities in the main room, while the attached en-suite offers bathroom facilities that rival (and beat) some of those on offer in many hotels across Australia.

The private outdoor decking is undercover, and is often occupied by visitors just whiling away the time watching the early or late rays of sun across the northern side of Wilpena Pound. Nearby the small circle of rocks signifies the spot for the evening (or early morning) gathering around a campfire.

Most of the tents have a southwest outlook towards Wilpena Pound which provides good protection from the sun in the warmer months, and stunning vistas on the Pound's walls during the cooler months. Two of the tents are 'family tents', designed for larger groups who may wish to come together and join in the adventure.

And for those looking for things to do at Wilpena Pound or in the Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park , the list is large including walking on the many walking trails and the Heysen Trail , cycling on the Mawson Trail or the Flinders Ranges by Bike loop, or touring the magnificent gorges , lookouts and creek crossings that the National Park has to offer.

The Ikara Safari Tents are located around 750m northwest of the Resort reception, Captain Starlight's restaurant , Paddy Dodger's Bar and Bistro and the mini-mart where there are supplies available for or after your day's activities. Wilpena Pound Resort is located 450km north of Adelaide on a sealed road the whole way. For further details refer to the Wilpena Pound Resort website or to their Facebook page .
