Cafes are constantly popping up all over Melbourne and they are gradually moving out further and further into the suburbs.

It's not uncommon to see the traditional milkbar revamp into a cafe or for a cafe to pop up in a quiet strip of local shops. Gellibrand is a prime example.



In the middle of suburbia, next to some small shops and Australia Post, Gellibrand is livening up this strip, especially on weekends. All makes sense when you realise the owners also own Adeney Milkbar in Kew.

As if to fit into this unassuming location, the #tabtop ">menu is unpretentious and features some classic and simple options.



On the other hand, they've put an interesting spin on their affogato with the addition of honey and chopped honeycomb. Leave it for a little while to melt together and the beverage becomes slightly sweet and refreshing.

They use coffee by Wide Open Road , which I find a tad on the bitter side for myself but the locals obviously love it.



I am always a sucker for sweet, dessert-like breakfasts but I wanted something filling too. In the end, I chose the corn and zucchini fritters with pumpkin puree, a poached egg and avocado.



It was a filling and healthy meal with a generous amount of smooth, pumpkin puree. My affogato was my indulgence!

One of my friends ordered the chilli scrambled eggs, but as with most brunch places they weren't very chilli.



Meanwhile, my other friend succumbed to the sweet option of toasted waffles with berry compote, fresh berries, marscapone and maple syrup.



It was the perfect spring menu item and definitely designed for sweet-tooths.



If you're only dropping in for coffee they have some goodies on display at the front including cookies, brownies and the irresistible Doughboy Doughnuts .



Visit Gellibrand for the quiet, local atmosphere. Just look out for the cafe with the big ice-cream sign (but they don't sell ice-cream - yet!)
