This weekend, I ventured up to Bondi. Inappropriately dressed for the weather, in a midi skirt and long sleeve shirt - I forgot that in some cities 25 degrees is actually hot - it seemed that there was only one thing to do.

With the help of Google Maps, I navigated from the beach side to Australia's favourite Gelato, Gelato Messina. To my disappointment, I was greeted by a sign advising that if I had any allergies, not to consume their products. I was willing to take the risk, and given the usual disclaimer. I didn't die, but seriously, if cross contamination is an issue for you, don't go here. Gelato's really not that great, anyway. For everyone elseā€¦

I was really tempted by Phuc King Good, but instead tried the Poached Figs in Marsala and the Blood Orange, in a cup. My friend tried the Sticken to my Date. The Poached Figs in Marsala was delicious - the sweet, syrupy flavour of real fig with a sticky praline crunch, through a custardy, milky cream base. The Blood Orange was a very strong, slightly acidic flavour. On its own, a refreshing, invigorating flavour. However, the fig was probably an unlikely partner.

Messina itself recommends Gianduia as a pair for the fig. I would also recommend a chocolate or berry based flavour. However, with an ability to taste test, try before you buy. Unfortunately, walking back down to the beach, I had to eat my treat quickly, to avoid it melting into a slush.
