Walk into on 300 Rundle Street and something immediately feels different. Gone are the familiar sparkling, ultra-sterile white countertops and bright panelling one usually encounters in such ice creameries and tubs of wavelike gelato - at least at first glance - are nowhere to be seen.

Instead, walk into the store and you are immediately confronted by matt black walls against gleaming chrome. Behind a brightly lit counter are rows of mirrorlike covers concealing a variety of different flavours. Seasonal fruit, locally sourced, sustainably farmed, natural ingredients are blended with fresh milk in concoctions divided into fruits (kiwi, custard apple, peach, watermelon, watermelon, mandarin), comfortingly familiar options (salted caramel, brownies, rum and raisin, chocolate-mint and hazelnut) to slightly less common offerings including matcha green tea with lychee, peanut butter, fig & whisky and apple pie.

Prices are reasonable with $5 for a generous single scoop and $8 a double scoop. The gelato is also available to take home in cartons and tubs.

If you're in the city from 3pm to 10:30pm between Thursday and Sunday and find yourself struck by a sudden aching hunger for natural artisan gelato, Mazzoni may well satisfy that ulcerating urge.
