Gasworks Arts Park proudly presents from the 1st to 4th May 2016.Come along and witness eight of Australia's finest circus and physical theatre acts battle over three nights of scorching competition. Be dazzled by an array of first-class entertainers, whose amazing skills span trapeze, juggling, acrobatics and more. Each act will perform for fifteen minutes, and then a live judging panel and audience will pick who competes in the Gasworks Circus Showdown Spectacular… and who will be crowned the Gasworks Circus Showdown champion!
Gasworks Circus Showdown is the only performance opportunity of its kind in Australia. It's a festival of circus performance showcasing exceptional circus and physical theatre talent from Melbourne and beyond. The winning act will receive a professional development prize valued at more than $4,000. Gasworks Circus Showdown is proudly supported by Creative Victoria. The prize money is generously donated by the Gasworks Patrons Foundation. The festival concludes with a Gasworks Circus Showdown on Saturday 4th January 2016.2016 Shortlisted Finalists include:
Hannah Cryle presents her One Woman ShowHannah was born to play a supporting role. She's a base, who plays the base. She sings harmonies and her prop handling skills put most lovely assistants to shame. She's organised and forgettable. She's an invaluable piece to any ensemble and in this show she will be performing an ensemble of one. A solo ensemble show.
Karl Laczko presents Impossible GlowAn enticing solo of self-developed light up juggling clubs, Impossible Glow. After studying mechatronics engineering, Karl had the idea of making LED glow juggling clubs that could sense when they are caught and thrown. Be wowed by juggling, but not as you know it – watch as glow clubs change colour not only just in time with the music, but also based on their movement and position while they are juggled. Please note, this act contains strobe effects. The Element of Consequence presents Incredibly Talented FemalesThe Element of Consequence has a natural suspense, as it is often inherently dangerous. But what takes place when you embrace those dangers, and then seek even more? The Element of Consequence explores what happens to a 'regular' circus act when an additional factor is introduced. When bodies entwined in rope are pushed off balance and props are stolen mid-trick…
One Fell Swoop presents By a ThreadBy a Thread is a new ensemble circus creation, exploring the relationship between trust and play on an innovative aerial apparatus. Spools of rope run through pulleys and wrap bodies, explicitly connecting the artists' motions. The actions of one acrobat affect and implicate the movements of others in a careful negotiation of cause and effect.Long Answers to Short Questions Tom Davis explores the biomechanics of human balance and anxiety. The work uses circus to explain the scientific concepts of human balance and the physical and emotional forces involved that keep us there. A great blend of theatre, lecture and dangerous stunts, mixed up with all that circus malarkey everyone loves.
The Fumbling BumblersThe Fumbling Bumblers are two struggling jugglers. Watch as they inflict 15 minutes of circus and stupidity. They joke, they juggle, they do all their own stunts to the beat of their own live band, the Strumbling Drumblers. The Fumbling Bumblers promise fun for the whole family... Just not all at once.
Madhouse CircusHelium balloons are the delight of children at birthday parties everywhere! For some of us this doesn't change when we grow up, especially when we choose to spend our days with the circus. See helium balloons interact with the German Wheel in mind-boggling ways! Warning: Balloons will pop!
The Flying Xamels present 4 & #43 ; 4 = 4Four people. Four ropes. Four lives. They exist in the real world, and they exist in the vertical world. Where do they fit? Watch as four very different people move on a common ground and share their very separate world, transposed and subverted into the vertical environment of the performance.Performances and Ticketing is as follows:Gasworks Circus ShowdownWednesday 1 June at 7.30pmThursday 2 June at 7.30pmSINGLE TICKET PRICESFull $28Concession $23Moving Parts Subscribers $10Code word provided upon booking a subscription to Moving PartsSEE BOTH SHOWS AND SAVE!Full subscription (attend both Wednesday and Thursday nights) $40 ($20 per show!)Concession subscription (attend both Wednesday and Thursday nights) $34 ($17 per show!)Gasworks Circus Showdown SpectacularSaturday 4 June at 7.30pmSINGLE TICKET PRICESPremium $49Full $38Concession $33Includes a delicious glass of Brown Brothers wine and the best seats in the house! To purchase tickets, please visit www.gasworks.org.au**
