Garie Beach

Reader Review by Nick Bendel

So, you've had a long, hard week and you want to spend the day relaxing. But how? The answer is to head to a slice of paradise known as Garie Beach.

Situated in the Royal National Park, Garie is a popular spot, thanks to its stunning natural setting, choice of activities and impressive facilities. As an added bonus, it is even possible to spend the night, with a campsite and youth hostel situated nearby.

The most popular pastime is simply sunbaking on the long, glorious expanse of sand. That should blow off no shortage of stress. And if you find yourself getting hot and sweaty, some friendly surf (which is patrolled during the season) is on hand.

But there's more to Garie than just a wonderful beach. For starters, it's a popular fishing spot. It's also a stop along the 26 kilometre Coast Walk, which means that there is some spectacular bushwalking to be done. If you head north, you will reach a breathtaking lookout after 20-30 minutes; it is then about six kilometres to Wattamolla. If you head south, you will immediately encounter some charming Depression-era shacks, before climbing several lovely green hills and crossing a couple of beaches. The most spectacular sight, though, comes after approximately four kilometres- the enthralling stretch of palm forest that is Burning Palms.

Back at the beach, the recently-renovated amenities block will ensure that your day out remains as civilised as possible. There's a picnic area, a large toilet/shower block and (during the season) a kiosk.

Still wondering if Garie's for you? Then check out these photos.

If you've concluded that one day is not enough, you've got two choices of accommodation: the youth hostel or the campsite at North Era (one kilometre to the south). Either way, a booking is required. For the former, call 9261-1111; for the latter, phone the national park on 9542-0683.
