The birds are a chirpin', the flowers are a bloomin' and the bees are a buzzin' – ahh, it must be spring, and with it private gardens open up for the public viewing. Spectacular blossoms, bulbs and bonsai are surrounded by ponds and lakes in landscaped gardens you wish were yours.

September sees displays in the north-west suburb of Galston at 3 locations, as follows:-

Golden Wheel Buddhist Retreat

With 80 cherry blossom trees, this 6 year old Asian-inspired garden is a fitting place for prayers with its Buddhist temple and shrines. Normally closed to the general public, it provides peace in beautiful surroundings.

A traditional Koi pond with 60 huge and colourful koi carp can be found in front of the Hall of the Goddess of Mercy and a Bodhi tree (an old sacred fig tree) onsite is significant as this species of tree was the one said to have enlightened the founder of Buddhism as he sat under it meditating.

Citrus trees abound and the fruit from a wide range of these is used as offerings to Buddha. There's also ornamental peaches, camellias, conifers, cacti and succulents. Bonsai on pine stands line the edges of the garden.

This spiritual retreat can be found at 405 Galston Road, next to Galston High School. The main temple will be open, so take a peek inside at the ornate building and its gold buddhas. Onsite parking is accessible and a gold coin donation is appreciated.

Elegans

There's nothing more beautiful than wandering through paths adorned with a rainbow of colours and this collector's garden has plenty of meandering and colour. It is a huge garden with 4 lakes, striking bridges and garden constructions.

Started by owner Bill Fleming 30 years ago, interesting views are around every corner with amazing maples, camellias, begonias, bromeliads, ferns and rainforest plants thriving. On my visit last year, I found many unusual flowers I hadn't seen before that were quite striking in appearance and left me in awe of nature once again.

A few garden stalls are available on the Spectacular weekend and refreshments can be had with morning and afternoon teas for a small price. Toilet facilities are also at your disposal.

You can easily feel a million miles away from everyday life in this magnificent garden that is a photographer's dream as you follow the trails with overhanging trees providing tunnels and surprises around each bend.

It's a blend of both native and exotic plants and is located at 21 Fishburn Road. Entry is $5 per person with children under 18 being free.

Birchgrove

With a flower scheme of blue, pink and white 'cottage', Kate and Paul Stanley's Birchgrove endorses the country feel. Heritage and French Bourbon roses, cottage perennials, Bearded irises and other unusual bulbs sit amongst weeping cherries, grand magnolias, camellia japonicas, prunus, maples, a silver elm, a white jacaranda and 90 specialty trees.

There's also a bush garden with ironbarks, white mahogany, wombat vine, native orchids, violets, crocus and rare clivias.

A cloud tree (a Japanese-style topiary with rounded balls clipped on branches) is being developed and shaped using the 'Niwaki' method (Japanese tripod ladders), to optimise the beauty of the plant. Along with topiaried hedges, the creativity and artistry of the owners is shown.

Rare plants will be on sale in this park-like garden at 16 Fishburn Road and visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy on the lawns. A toilet is also available here.

Entry here is $5 per person as well, with children under 18 admitted free.

All proceeds of this event will go to charities so take a drive and contribute to wonderful causes whilst enjoying the beauty of these gardens, only a stone's throw away from Castle Hill in Sydney's north-west.
