Is your child a budding Balzac or an undiscovered Uccello? Then why not foster your child's creative talent with a trip to the Gallery of Modern Art?
The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) Children's Art Centre presents a range of activities and programs aimed at introducing children to the world of art in a manner that they will find appealing and easy to understand. And with many of the children's activities related to the major exhibits in the gallery, children and parents are able to learn and create together.
Sunday at the Gallery provides free craft workshops suited to children aged three to twelve years. These workshops are run by local Queensland artists and are usually linked to the current exhibitions (for example, during May the Children's Art Centre will be exploring the gallery's Unnerved: The New Zealand Project, which focuses on contemporary art and cinema in New Zealand). Sunday at the Gallery takes place two Sundays of every month (see the
GoMA website for dates) from 2pm until 4pm. Bookings are not required.
If your child is interested in the story behind the painting they will benefit from an interactive kid's tour of the gallery. These volunteer led tours are specially designed for children aged four to ten years and use storytelling and sensory clues to allow children to investigate four or five different art works.
And proving that it's never too early to learn about art, the very popular Toddler Tuesday program uses games, movement and craft to allow toddlers and their parents to have fun while learning about art. Due to the popularity of this class, GoMA repeats the same program for two months to ensure that everyone has a chance to participate. Toddler Tuesday runs two sessions every Tuesday, from 10am to 10.45am, and 11am to 11.45am. Bookings are required for this session and can be made via the website or by calling the Bookings Officer on 3840 7255.
Even if your child isn't a future Van Gogh, the Children's Art Centre is a fun, educational and inexpensive way to pass the day – and children always love to get their hands dirty!
