Gabriel Orozco finds things and turns them into art. Making things into art is essentially what all artists do, but Orozco finds objects that are already in existence, things that he finds – like a Womble – and alters them until they're works of art. And seeing one of his shows often involves seeing the familiar as wonderful, or at least worth looking at.
La DS is one of his best known work, it was a Citroen car and is now two thirds of a Citroen car, the middle section having been taken out from hood to boot; and this piece will be part of this exhibition with is a sort of 'greatest hits' show. A skull with a geometric pattern is another memorable piece. He's also displaying many photographs here which share his sculpture's interest in the potential beauty and/ or absurdity of everyday objects.
This show is a good one for art lovers, naturally, but also a good one for people interested in seeing something unusual, something they've never seen before. For you'll see plenty if that here – whether it's a new reading of the New York Times Obituaries column, or a photo series of many of this city's yellow motorbikes.
