Picture it, Melbourne, 17 degrees, on a mostly sunny Saturday. People overreact to the flash of sun and warmth on our faces and decide to go out wearing something that is more suitable for a spring day.
It's 12:53pm.
Friends of Mine is pretty damn busy. This seems to be the case most days, especially on the weekends because of people like you and me.
Never say this unless you mean it.
Who are Friends of Mine? Have you been to
Porgie & Mr. Jones? Have you been to
Snowpony? Well,
Friends of Mine is the third pillar of Melbourne breakfast temples brought to you by
Mr. Jason Jones. A lot of organic options on all menus and a lot of fresh and exciting takes on the 'usual' breakfast items one may find at breakfast places.
Double espresso.
I like my coffee strong, which is why I always order double espressos, I would have preferred a stronger dose, but alas you cannot always get what you want. The cup of nectar had light and fluffy crema with a lovely colour, and very light roasty flavours. Some may rant and rave, however for me their coffee is not what will bring me back, it is their food.
Toast with Organic Crunchy Peanut Butter.
All the meals are well presented and vary in price from $5.50 all the way up to mid $20s. The toast and peanut butter was modest and pleasant, one may even say it was homely. The bread board is a great choice for serving toast on, much better than serving toast on a plate - because we've all had that moment where we've seen condensation on a plate and no one likes that. The peanut butter wasn't too salty and the butter was a suitable palate cleanser. Delicious.
Final words
Prepare to line up and wait a while, regardless if you are by yourself or in a group.
They don't split bills and accept cash only. This is slightly inconvenient considering how big they are and their location - Richmond is not Footscray, and they are not serving laksa or meals with vermicelli noodles. Make sure you have cash, otherwise, there is a 7-11 opposite.
The staff are polite and attentive. They do a pretty decent job considering how busy the whole place gets and how much floor space they have to cover.
On the last Sunday of every month they offer to their 'friends' (that's you and me) high tea. Bookings are essential. It starts at 4pm. $45 per person. The usual items will be served with a glass of champagne on arrival. I love the word champagne.
Events and private dinners can be arranged by contacting them through the telephony service.
I can see myself organising a breakfast with my friends here. There are at least 1,000 things I'd like to try on the menu. With friends like these, who wouldn't want to come back?
