The French magazine, l'Histoireis recognised as the most important national historical magazine which is not an academic journal. It is one of France's most circulated monthly mainstream magazines dedicated to historical studies and, recently, it published an issue entirely dedicated to Australian history.

As one of the authors published in the Australian issue, Romain Fathi, joins with Alliance Française to present this conference. He will review the magazine's Australian-focused edition and examine aspects of Australian history fascinating for the French. He will discuss how the magazine has helped develop the impressions the French have of Australian history.

Romain will discuss just how much the French know about Australia and whether their interests lie in Aboriginal history or the ANZACs or both.

Once the facts are laid bare, Romain will explain how these cultural understandings have developed and provide the background on how the French perspective on Australian history have been cultivated.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session with Romain.

Romain Fathi , the conference presenter, is currently enrolled in a jointly awarded Ph.D. program between The University of Queensland and Sciences Po (Paris, France). His longstanding research interests concerning Australian national identity, the Great War and war commemorations have led to the opportunities for him to study and teach in several universities, including Sciences Po, Yale in the United States and The University of Queensland. A significant number of his academic publications deal with Australian war memorialisation and include a recently published monograph in French entitled, Représentations muséales du corps combattant de 14-18. L'Australian War Memorial de Canberra au prisme de l'Historial de la Grande Guerre de Péronne.

Romain's background and knowledge ensures the evening will be most stimulating and provide a wonderful learning opportunity for all history buffs and those interested in French-Australian relations – not to mention the opportunity to enjoy a glass of French wine!
