Flaky pastries, sweet tarts and super chocolate-y cakes... nobody does bakery like the French. For authentic French desserts, try these patisseries.

Chouquette, 19 Barker Street, New Farm

The smell of chocolate and pastry that overwhelms you when you enter this patisserie is incredible. And not only does Chouquette serve up authentic French treats, the staff also speaks French! So order un cafe, s'il vous plait, make a selection from the range of baguettes, gateux and patisserie and soak up the sights of the Left Bank New Farm.

Chouquette is open from 6.30am until 5.00pm Wednesday until Saturday and 6.30am until 12.30pm on Sunday.

Le Bon Choix, Brisbane City and Ascot

Le bon choix is French for the right choice, but this cafe is not the right choice for anyone who is trying to stick to a diet. If you're treating yourself, you can't do much better than this range of artisan pastries and treats. The store in Ascot is licensed and remains open until 10.00pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

Jocelyn's Provisions, Shop 8, Centro on James, Fortitude Valley

This establishment looks like an old fashioned bakery, with sweet and creamy cakes and pastries encased in glass cabinets. Jocelyn's Provisions also stocks savoury snacks like leek galette, savoury tarts and flaky gougeres.

This patisseries is open Monday to Friday from 8.00am until 5.00pm, Saturday from 7.00am until 4.00pm and Sunday from 9.00am until 2.00pm.

The mousse cakes at Le Bon Choix are a real treat, but the chocolate-filled doughnuts are absolutely sinful. Also try French Patisserie at Toowong or Clayfield. www.frenchpatisserie.com.au/

For Northsiders, try French and Mor @ Albany Creek (cnr of Keong & Dawn Rds). They stock Le Bon Choiix pastries exclusively, and their quiches give Jocelyn's Provisions a run for their money. Brilliant high teas also available.

Definitely Chouquette! EVERTHING is good, including their lunch-time filled baguettes. My daughter loves their apple crumble tart, I love the mille-feuille (the best in Brisbane, by far), and their citrus tarts.
