Fremantle debuts in the NAB Australian Football League Women's (AFLW) competition on February 4 2017, an event that has been arguably 100 years in the making.

A photo unearthed in the State Library of Western Australia shows a women's football team in 1917, with team members from a Perth department store. Another photograph shows a girls' football team playing in 1918.

In the ensuing years the sport was dominated by men, particularly in a commercial aspect. Now in 2017, Fremantle has announced the first 22 selections for its women's team line-up , coached by Michelle Cowan. The hotly anticipated season will kick off on 4 February 2017, with Fremantle playing against the Western Bulldogs in Melbourne.

Some of the home games will be based at Fremantle Oval, and entry is free so bumper crowds are expected.
