If someone asked you, 'What is Australia's longest running festival?' What would you say? Maybe it's the Derby Boab or Moomba Festival. No, try again. The answer lies in Western Australia. It is the Fremantle Festival .

This major event is about to celebrate its 106th year, taking place from November 18 – December 4, 2011, extending for more than 2 weeks, over three weekends. Made up of more than 75 events throughout Fremantle, it's sure to be another colourful and exciting display with performances, floats, costumes, music, stalls, activities and loads more.

Every year, inspiration is drawn from the community to bring this event to fruition, while taking into account the town's abundant history, the Fremantle Harbour 'port of Perth', a diverse range of industries and hobbies, etcetera. Fremantle itself is a tourist mecca, easily gathering interest locally, nationally and internationally, also for its art and culture.

The events list is long. Here is just a taste:

-The Fremantle Festival Street Parade moving through the city centre.
-Jazz in the Park, Children's Fiesta and the Sticky Maze at Samson Park. Enter into a maze of clear sticky tape and form the walls with paper. Join in games and activities.
-Coffee Festival; who can make the best coffee on the day?
-Projections on High; casting still and moving light projections onto the buildings on High Street.
-Fremantle Town Hall will come to life with music, comedy and fashion.
-Norfolk Lanes Youth Festival features performances by young music artists under age 25 and displays.
-Black Box Theatre performances.
-Kulcha Festival Club performances above Fremantle Cappuccino Strip.

A complete lift-out program of events is promised to emerge on Saturday, 5th November, 2011 in The West Australian newspaper and The Weekend West and should contain an events calendar. The jam-packed calendar can also be downloaded from the webpage or find them circulating at the Fremantle Festival. Contact (08) 9432 9786 or e-mail [email protected] for further enquiries.

During the year, the City of Fremantle asks for organisations, community groups, artists and schools to participate and submit an event. After all, these are primarily the people behind the ideas and visions for the festival. So be on the lookout for entry to join in next year.

Unfortunately, registrations for this year's festival have closed, but the 2012 Fremantle Festival will be open for application soon. Look here for details on how to participate in next year's events and check out the 2011 Fremantle Festival from an audience perspective.
