Fitzroy's greenhouse and dining room, Grub , located at 87-89 Moor Street, will provide a bright spot this winter, hosting free to feed cooking classes in June/July.

Ranging from Persian pickles to Sri Lankan curries to Tehran street food, there will be many opportunities to share stories with like-minded people and to learn from the passionate asylum seekers who instruct the sessions.

The free to feed project provides opportunities for asylum seekers and refugees from around the world to run cooking and storytelling gatherings.

On Sunday 12th June, Iranian born Mahshid cooks up her Persian favourites. You'll begin with a smoked eggplant and garlic dip (Mirza ghasemi) and a beautiful and very popular beef and yellow split pea stew (Khoresh Gheymeh) served with saffron potatoes and aromatic rice. Finally, Mahshid will teach you the secrets behind Ranginak which is a beautiful Persian date dessert. Session runs from 6.00 - 9.00pm ($80).

There will be a special Refugee Week class - a Persian pickles and preserves workshop - taking place from 2.00 - 5.00pm on Sunday 19th June ($80). In this class, Iranian Hamed will teach you the art of Persian-style pickling and preserving. This will be a relaxed, hands-on class, in which Hamed will teach you four varieties of his famous pickles and jams including delicious Persian mixed vegetables and sour cherry jam, carrot jam and a very typical Persian jam of rose petals. Participants will take home jars of each variety made during the workshop, along with recipe cards.

Things will get spicy on Sunday 26th June, with Tamil instructor Niro teaching you how to make two authentic vegetarian curries - an eggplant curry and a pumpkin curry with green chilli - from scratch. Perfect to cut through the winter chill. For dessert, Niro will share with you his special sago pudding. Session runs from 6.00 - 9.00pm ($70).

Finally, at 6.00pm on Sunday 3rd July, Hamed will be demonstrating how to make Tehran Street Food ($80). Starting with Hamed's homemade dips and fragrant sour cherry and saffron tea, you'll then move on to felafel, corn, and Persianized hot dogs Tehran style. You will also learn to make Ash Reste a popular noodle soup packed with pulses and vegetables with a refreshing burst of fried mint and garlic.

At the end of each session, participants get to sit down and enjoy what they've cooked. They will also be given the recipes of all dishes on the menu to take home.
