This summer school holidays, Brisbane City Council's 33 libraries will host the Summer Reading program with numerous events and activities for kids up to 18 years old - all free, all fabulous, all fun!

From Saturday 14 December 2013 until Monday 27 January 2014, there will be heaps of reading and library activities for your children to enjoy in order to maximise their reading experience. Kids will be able to participate in pantomimes, storytelling, craft, cartoon and writing activities. Just don't forget to grab a Summer Reading postcard and collect a sticker for attending an event or finishing a book because a special prize will be awarded to those who have completed their postcard.

Some activities and events require booking. In addition, the locations, times and dates may vary so make sure you check out their website for further details. In the meantime, read on for my summary on what's available.

[SECTION]Christmas Themed Events[/SECTION]



Get the creative brains to work for the diverse range of crafty Christmas workshops available.

For children aged four and over, they can create that special Christmas card making use of pre-cut images from old and new Christmas books; little ones aged five and over can spruce up their Christmas tree using feathers, string and beads to make Christmas ornaments; youngsters aged six and over can design their own story sphere incorporating their favourite words and pictures from a book; and for kids aged 12 and over, they can make a magazine Christmas tree using old magazines.

Other things that may interest the the young ones include Get me to the North Pole with the Cheeky Monkey Club where children will be fascinated by the story and enjoy solving the problems presented and The Spirit of Christmas with Bazil Grumble containing storytelling, masks, song, dance, among others, encouraging creativity and learning.

[SECTION]Other Crafty Workshops[/SECTION]



With an abundance of craft workshops on offer, there is certainly something here for all kinds of creative cats.

For children aged four and over, attend Make My Mini World to create objects and people from coloured paper to put in mini worlds or Investig8 Art for a session of the best creative art experience; for kids aged five and over, they can join in workshops to make fashionable jewellery using recycled objects, create a monster origami from just one piece of paper or even make an origami monster hand puppet; children over seven years old can express their creativity in the hands-on cartooning workshop; and youngsters aged ten and over can learn how to make their own unique string bookmark using beads, thread and tassels.

For those with a green thumb, Make My Own Terrarium is just for them. Here, they use plastic bottles and pebbles to produce their very own terrarium. And if they're between ages eight and eighteen, pop by the Lego Activity Centre and build some Lego art.

[SECTION]Entertainment Galaxy[/SECTION]



There is an assortment of exciting entertainment on offer.

Fabulous Lemon Drops is an excellent event for it is captivating and educational where kids jump, twirl and shake to this live music show.

Kiddies aged four and over will be able to party their little hearts out at Monsters Ball with monster music, fun party games and fantastic prizes. Just don't forget to wear their finest monster gear.

For fun and interactive performances don't miss out on Search for a Superhero with Bazil Grumble, Lissa and Nee Nee's Library Adventure, Stories and Songs with Nadia Sunde because children are guaranteed to laugh, giggle and have a whole lot of fun.

[SECTION]Science & Other Awesome Things[/SECTION]



Lots of science based workshops are available for children aged between seven and twelve.

Go on an adventure with mad scientists at Street Science and be fascinated by the weird, the amazing and the uncanny. If they've ever dreamed about becoming a cool scientist, then let the hands-on workshop Exciting Electricity realise their dreams where they find out about the transformation of energy. What's more, they can learn about the physics of light and colour at Light, Colour and Kaleidoscopes using magic mirrors, loopy lenses and colour mixing.

Other fabulous workshops include 'Where the Wild Things Are' Drama Workshop where children aged four and over bring stories to life using their imagination and body; and Clay Animation Workshop which encourages children aged eight and over to learn how to make their own superhero characters and bring them to life on the big screen using the latest software.
