The Southgate Cinema experience is a bit different to the other outdoor cinema programs which are currently running in Melbourne, such as
Rooftop Cinema,
Moonlight Cinema and
St. Kilda Openair Cinema.
www.celebratesouthgate.com.au
First of all it is
free, however bookings (which can easily be made
online) are recommended as there is limited seating.
Secondly, this is a
silent cinema, which means patrons will be provided with their own personal headphones and if you like, you can also bring along your own headphones. Either way, you can adjust the volume to your own liking and will be sure to enjoy the feature film without being disturbed by other patrons.
Thirdly, patrons sit on
deck chairs - which isn't so unusual given this is an 'outdoor' cinema. Which leads me to the supposedly 'outdoor' venue; the Southgate Cinema is located on the upper level of
Southgate, near the
Red Emperor restaurant and
Aero Plus.
It is located in an open atrium, so you will have an 'outdoor' cinema experience, whilst being undercover. What's great about this is you can be sure that the scheduled screenings will go ahead, unlike at the other outdoor cinema events, where Melbourne's unpredictable weather often results in screenings being cancelled on the event date.

So what films are screening at the Southgate Cinema?
The December film program is largely Christmas themed. Feature films such as
Love Actually,
Four Holidays and
Joyeux Noel are screening alongside the popular comedy
Kenny and the documentary
Fire in Babylon.
The January film program kicks of with Hollywood classics such as
My Fair Lady,
Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and
The Philadelphia Story. Celebrate the Australian Open 2012 by attending the screening
Wimbledon and commemorate Australia Day by attending the screenings of
Strictly Ballroom and
Australia.
The February film program continues the Australian theme with screenings of
Muriel's Wedding and
Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. The British comedy
Death At A Funeral and the classic
Charade will also screen in February.
