A
wise man once said that everyone deserves music. Unfortunately, concert tickets are often limited to those with super fast internet connections or super deep pockets.
Forget about that international artists you've been dying to see – the
Brisbane Powerhouse Centre for the Arts (
119 Lamington Street, New Farm) plays host to a variety of gigs over the weekend. They're free and they lend support to local independent artists.
The
Residents is a regular Friday night event which gives Brisbane bands an audience. Local indie pop bands take over the
Turbine Platform, with each band getting a month to woo the crowd. If you like em, show your support by coming back each week. After all,
The Saints and
Powderfinger both got their start by playing in local pubs and community centres.
On Saturdays, a different genre takes over for the afternoon. On the first Sunday of the month, that genre is world music.
Planet takes listeners around the world, with acts and genres that represent every nation on earth. One week you might be grooving to Latin drum beats, the next chilling out with some Indian sitar.
Planet kicks off at 5.00pm and lasts approximately two hours.
Waxing Lyrical showcases singer/songwriters. On the second Saturday of the month, from 5.00pm until 7.00pm, local talent takes to the stage to perform their original songs. Afterwards, they share the stories of their creation and discuss what inspires them.
Following a lengthy hiatus,
Turbine Jazz is back and better than ever. The third Saturday of the month is dedicated to ragtime, bebop, swing and Dixieland – anything, so long as its jazz. Be there by 5.00pm for scatting and solos, courtesy of
Jazz Queensland.
And the fourth Saturday of the month is for the pop princesses.
Popalicious presents pop performances from students at
Queensland University of Technology Creative Industries. Dance your cares away between 5.00pm and 7.00pm.
End your week with a Sunday arvo session that rocks! Every Sunday, local indie pop and rock acts take to the stage to entertainment the masses.
Live Spark begins at 3.30pm and ends at 6.00pm. Hang around afterwards for
Livewired, a free comedy program.
If the price of tickets to see your favourite artists has got you down, drown your sorrows and get a free music fix with one of these gigs at the
Brisbane Powerhouse.
