How's your hair? Looking a bit limp? A bit flat? Awful?

Some people go to the hairdresser with big intentions – with a plan to have a brand new cut, a new look, a complete overhaul, a makeover no less. But then you get in the chair, and look across at the mirror, at that familiar face (yours), at that familiar hair (yours), at the familiar hairdresser who says: "Usual?" and before you know it you've sunk back into your seat and mumbled: "yes please", all good intentions blown away by the hairdryer. An hour later you're extracting fifty big ones from your wallet and walking out of the shop with the usual mop, albeit shorter and without any split ends.

But it could all have been so different.

There are tons of stylists out there who are willing to cut your hair for free. How about that! The only snag is that they're cutting to gain experience, so you'll need to be pretty flexible about the style they want to try.

Of course, this is agreed beforehand, so if their suggestion fills you with horror, you can politely decline. But think about it, they might suggest some great new look you'd never even considered. A new look for free – now that's something worth thinking about.

And if you're lucky, the stylist will give you a choice of looks – don't forget, they want you to look good and be happy!

Some cutters might be in the middle of an NVQ course, and though they'll be perfectly competent, a qualified tutor will more often than not be on hand just in case.

Others will be building a portfolio and might want to take your photo once the cut is complete.

They might even need you for a fashion competition – so you'll get your cut in front of a panel of judges!

Occasionally there may be a small charge, possibly for materials such as hair dye. All of these details should be made clear in the advert, or at the very least prior to the cut commencing.

It's easy to find information about free cuts on the web – for starters, Gumtree have a special page here, and StarNow also have a page here.

So what are you waiting for? Go get your new look now!
