If, just after Christmas, you're feeling how a turkey feels just before Christmas (ie. fattened up), you might be interested to hear that Walk London are offering free guided walks, called 'Winter Wanders', at the end of January.

This could be the ideal way to walk off your newly acquired wobbly bits, while at the same time getting to know a bit more about the city of London. You might even make a new friend or two along the way.

Funding from Transport for London has made the whole thing possible, with Walk London liaising with the capital's local authorities to come up with a variety of routes, long and short, taking you all around the capital, to places some of which you probably never even knew existed.

You and your legs are spoilt for choice, with 28 walks taking place on Saturday and 25 on Sunday. The vast majority cover a distance of less than five miles, so even the most exercise-shy can join in, no problem. The pace will be leisurely with plenty of time to find your breath, should you happen to lose it.

The earliest start time on both days is 10.30am, with the final walk on Saturday – Ghosts of the Old City – setting off at 7.30pm and finishing at around 9.30pm.

Sunday's last walk – Haunted London – strolls off into the darkness at 7.30pm.

Fear not though; it's not all ghosts and hauntings. Other walks include the intriguingly named Somewhere Else London, Old Westminster, the London of Oscar Wilde, the British Museum Tour, Little Venice, Subterranean London, City Hall to Canary Wharf and the Old Chelsea Village Pub Walk. There are many more besides these – click here for the full list.

The walks are free, led by experienced guides and require no advance booking. Simply pick a walk that looks interesting and get along to the starting point.

Thousands of people are expected to join, and everyone is welcome.
