The National Heritage Listed Adelaide Parklands

The Adelaide parklands are quite unique, recognised by the Australian government with a national heritage listing together with the city of Adelaide design. Developers and politicians sometimes complain that they are little utilised, but that is blatantly untrue.

What I most like about the Adelaide parklands is that there is a place for everyone. Playing fields of all types for the sports minded. Awesome playgrounds for kids such as in Bonython Park with its activity hub. The beautiful Veale Gardens which are so popular for weddings. Victoria Park for dog walkers and exercise junkies, with a flying area for radio controlled planes nearby.

I have previously written about the Adelaide parklands pleasures of the Wirranendi Park Interpretive Trail in Park 23 and the urban forest of Narnungga Park. Now the City of Adelaide is making it even easier to experience the highlights of the parklands in Adelaide with free guided walks.

There are four different free guided walks in Adelaide parklands, in different locations and appealing to different people. Bookings are essential for all the guided walks, but it's easy to do. If you plan to do a walk then you should book early to avoid disappointment.

A Reed Bed in the River Torrens at Bonython Park

Bonython Park/Tulya Wardli's Bunyip Trail
The first walk is a great school holidays activity, following the Bunyip Trail in Bonython Park to learn the intricacies of a riparian ecosystem. (Riparian means relating to or situated on the banks of a river). Find all about how the River Torrens would have looked before European settlement, along one of the most hidden natural oases in Adelaide.
