I caught up with Eric McCusker of Mondo Rock recently, and had a chance to ask him a few questions about Mondo Rock's upcoming 33 &
#8531 ; Anniversary reunion tour. "I would say to expect good music..." Eric McCusker responded, referring to how he would get 20-somethings to attend the concerts. "I've just been listening to some live recordings of our original lineup in the 80s... Mondo Rock in some ways were a singles band and in some ways were a ballad band, but live, it was always a fierce band, with an incredible level of musicianship."
McCusker doesn't buy into the thought that the new generations of music aren't as good as the days gone by, but promises "... it'll be some amazing playing, great songs, and it will stand the test of time."
Each of the band members have stayed in the music industry and are successful musicians in their own right.
Described by some as a mixture of sound somewhere between
The Tubes (punk, rock) and
The Blockheads (new wave, funk), McCusker admits that much of his influence as a musician in the 70s came from the likes of the Beatles, and American musician and producer
Todd Rundgren , known in Australia mostly for his 1988 hit, "Can We Still be Friends".
Mondo Rock are hitting the road this month with the classic line-up not seen since the Summer of 1981. Ross Wilson, Eric McCusker, James Black, Paul Christie and Gil Matthews are reuniting for a national tour that coincides with the 33rd anniversary of the band's breakthrough album,
Chemistry, generating four massive hits.
The all Mondo affair will be a two hour performance including the full Chemistry album, with Top 40 singles:
State of the Heart, Cool World, Chemistry and
Summer of '81. The second half of the night will cover other highlights of the band's career, and will include album favourites, rarities, and of course, other hits such as
No Time, Fugitive Kind, and
Come Said the Boy.
A limited deluxe edition, double CD & 20 page book version of the Chemistry album with bonus tracks, B-sides, previously unreleased demos and live recordings, was released by Aztec Records on 2 May. The remastered Chemistry album is now available on iTunes, so you can polish up on the lyrics before Mondo Rock hits the stage live in a city near you.
