Music lovers will enjoy attending this free concert, on Sunday 10 August at 2.30pm, featuring the music of
John Adams, Maurice Ravel, Duke Ellington and Don Banks.

They can enjoy both jazz and classical music as the Monash Academy Orchestra and members of the Monash University Big Band present a program that encompasses both.

The concert is conducted by award-winning Australian conductor Fabian Russell who has been at the forefront of Australian classical music for the last 25 years.

First up will be Shaker Loops by the American composer John Adams. Adams grew up near a religious 'Shaker' community in New Hampshire and says, "the term 'Shaker' conjures up visions of the pious and industrious souls caught up in the ecstatic frenzy of a dance that culminated in the epiphany of physical and spiritual transcendence." States that his music reflects.

James Russo, featured in the photo above is a third year student and winner of the 2013 Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music Concerto Competition. He will perform the classical work Maurice Ravel's Piano Concerto in G. This classical work is deeply infused with jazz idioms and harmonies.

Then the concert gives over entirely to jazz with Duke Ellington's Black, Brown and Beige and Nexus by the Australian musical innovator Don Banks.

Duke Ellington's jazz symphony dates back to its premiere in Carnegie Hall in 1943. Ellington described the piece as 'a parallel to the history of the Negro in America' and as his largest and most ambitious composition.

The Monash University Big Band is an 18-piece ensemble now in its 11th year under the direction of Jordan Murray.

The concert will run for approx. 2 hours with a 20 minute interval.
