The month of May in South Australia is history month. There's always a long list of really unique and interesting events and activities to do.

One event that I highly recommend that you pop onto your calendar is the night time opening of Fort Glanville in Semaphore.

The Fort will be lit up by lamplight and the guns and cannons will be fired. I went last year and had an amazing time. It's great fun for kids - but get them to cover their ears when the big cannon is fired - it's a bit loud!

The night's fun starts with the posting of the Guard and a brief history of the Fort.

The 2-pounder, 16-pounder and 65-pounder cannons will be fired. There'll be a demonstration of a volley firing drill plus there is a museum and tunnels that the kids love to explore.

The evening will close with the 'retreat' ceremony.

You can find this event, as well as dozens of other amazing historical events in the About Time: South Australia's History Festival brochure. You can also download their app and put all your favourites into your very own History guide.
