How would you like to support local farmers, reduce carbon emissions and get cheap, fresh local produce? It's easy thanks to
Food Connect.
Food Connect is a
Community Support Agriculture (CSA) project. CSA is an initiative that brings farmers and consumers together. It works like this – the consumer purchases 'shares' in a grower's farm by paying a membership or subscription fee. In return, they receive a share of the output. This system gives farmers a better cash flow and the benefits for consumers are numerous – cheap, fresh food, the peace of mind of knowing where it comes from and having the opportunity to visit the farm.
Food Connect links Australian farmers with local customers. Seasonal produce is sourced from local farms and delivered to a City Cousin (i.e. a school, community centre or residential home that acts as a drop off and pick up spot) each week. By keeping the farms and the distributions centres close, freight costs and pollution are reduced.
Residents can subscribe by getting in touch with the
Food Connect Homestead in their local area. There are chapters in
Brisbane,
Sydney and
Adelaide. Your subscription is entirely up to you. There is a huge selection of foods to choose from – cheese, oils, honey, bread, beverages, meat and loads more. There is a minimum of four boxes per customer.
