If you haven't yet heard of
Florence and the Machine , there's a good chance you've been living under a rock for the last few years. Even if the name doesn't sound particularly familiar, you'll probably find that you have heard one of Florence Welch's songs on the radio, or her soaring vocals blaring from a passing car.
For all those who have heard of her, and highly admire her original lyrics and ethereal voice, this is your opportunity to see her live. Florence and The Machine will be touring Australia and New Zealand in May 2012, although many of her shows are already sold out.
Hailing from Camberwell in South London, Florence has made a name for herself in recent years, with sold out shows, gigs at some of the biggest music festivals (including Australia's Splendour In The Grass in 2010, the Glastonbury Festival, and, most recently, the famous Coachella Music Festival in California), and millions of records sold worldwide. Backed by her band of musicians, Florence has released two albums,
Lungs and
Ceremonials, which have risen quickly through the ranks, making Florence and the Machine a firm indie favourite (as well as a commercial success).
Florence's debut album,
Lungs, was released in 2009, instantly becoming a hit in the charts. Songs such as "Dog Days Are Over", "Kiss With A Fist", and a stylised cover of The Source's "You've Got The Love" helped her to score first position in the UK's Top 40 Charts, making
Lungs one of the best-selling albums of 2009 and 2010. The album also went double platinum in Australia, and many of the songs from the album featured in popular television shows including Gossip Girl, 90210, The Vampire Diaries and Grey's Anatomy.
In 2011, Florence released her second album,
Ceremonials, which she believes is "more dark [and] more heavy" than
Lungs, but which still has similar musical influences, despite the stronger sounds.
Ceremonials quickly reached number one position on the UK charts and soared to the top of other charts around the world. Her singles "Shake It Out", "What The Water Gave Me" and "No Light, No Light" continue to be popular on the airwaves now, with all three featuring within the Top 50 of Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2012.
Florence's voice has been likened to that of Kate Bush, Björk and PJ Harvey, yet she also has her own distinct style, both in sound and in her looks (apparently she loves to wear clothes she has discovered at op shops for her concert wardrobes).
This is one concert that fans will not want to miss, and I for one, can't wait until she visits Melbourne!
