Flipside Burger Bar

Is it just me or has the "gourmet burger" trend completely taken off in Perth? These days it seems that everywhere I turn I come across new establishments dedicated to the art of creating the humble hamburger. It looks like people have finally realised how much better a real burger tastes compared to their artificial cousins from fast-food chains. Thank the culinary gods! It's about time. If you have yet to visit one of the many burger bars that Perth now has to offer let me recommend one for you to start with.

Nestled among the quaint antique stores on Queen Victoria Street sits one of my favourite weekend hangout spots in Fremantle; Flipside burger bar. Catering for meat lovers and vegetarians, youngsters and adults alike it's a great place to enjoy a delicious (and extremely filling) afternoon meal. Upon walking into the joint one's nose is greeted with the enticing aroma of meat sizzling and chips frying. The Flipside crew are busily pumping out burger after burger, often accompanied by their excellent thick cut chips. Their menu has a diverse range of flavour combinations to choose from, so if you're not sure what to order here are some of my personal favourites:

QVB with 100% prime WA beef, bacon, cheddar cheese, free range egg, beetroot slices, salad, tomato relish, and mayo.
TAXI C.A.B with free range chicken breast, avocado, bacon, salad, red onion, tomato relish, and mayo.
THE KENNY BURGER with a spicy chickpea and sweet potato patty, red pepper chilli jam, fresh coriander, rocket salad, and mayo.
TRIPLE B with free range chicken breast, brie cheese, whole cranberry sauce, salad, and mayo.

There are also plenty of extra options to choose from should you wish to add them to your burger. If you decide to get chips with your meal I also recommend trying their delicious and super garlicky aioli sauce as an accompaniment. One final note: beware that these burgers are not for the faint stomached as the servings are huge. I challenge anyone who goes there to try and eat the whole burger without letting the layers fall apart. If you're not keen on feeling like a beached whale after finishing a burger then perhaps go for the Mini Flip options perfect for the kids and as adult-sized snacks.

Once you've ordered your burger find a seat in the casual dining area or even head next door to Mrs Brown the wine bar, also owned by the creators of Flipside. I love that you get the choice to eat communally at the burger joint or to sit back and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere in the bar next door. So if you're looking for a place that makes supremely tasty burgers for a decent price then head to Flipside this weekend and unwind with your family and friends.
