When the sign says that this is the home to the best burger on the Fleurieu Peninsula, then it demands attention. And exactly as ordered, we pulled up, grabbed ourselves a seat and ordered two burgers from the . But where is Finniss ?

Finniss is a small town located midway between Strathalbyn and Goolwa on the Victor Harbor Railway line. Passenger trains ceased running on the line in 1984 with occasional tourist trains by Steamranger taking over since then. But occasional trains and the attraction of other towns in the area meant the town's population dwindled.

The railway station was abandoned, and the churches reverted to less frequent services. All that was left was an old Post Office which could barely make ends meet, until a great plan was hatched in 2013 to restore the old Post Office to a version of its glory days.

Now open 7 days a week and operating as a Cafe, General Store and Fodder Shop, the owners have created a unique offering in the midst of this farming country. With extended hours on Friday nights, and markets on the third Sunday of every month, visitors come from far and wide to enjoy.

The menu features some typical delights with an all day breakfast menu which is supplemented by burgers, pizzas and other standard offerings all served in a special Finniss style. We were tempted by the Chicken Burger, with a slice of real chicken breast, and the Steak Burger served with the lot. After spending some time devouring these dishes, it was easy to taste and see why the Cafe had won an award for the best burger on the Fleurieu.

On a warm day we enjoyed the table and chairs outside with a light breeze coming up from the lakes and South Coast . However, had it been cooler, then a table inside near the wood fire or alongside the rows of bric a brac and memorabilia would have been ideal shelter from the elements.

The Finniss General Store is open daily from 9am to 5pm, and open until 8pm on Fridays for the end of week meal, or a quick meal enroute to your holiday destination at Milang , Clayton Bay or Goolwa . Further details are available from Finniss General Store website or from their active Facebook page which often has details of future events.
