Wise-cracking private eyes, beautiful-but-dangerous leading ladies, guns, crime, fedoras and dark city streets: these are the essential elements of film noir - literally
black cinema. Some of the best examples of this very American film genre will be on show with
Film Noir at The Australian Cinémathèque at GOMA from Friday 31 March to Sunday 21 May 2017
The canon of film noir classics includes some of the best movies ever made. With iconic directors like Billy Wilder, Howard Hawks, Orson Welles and Fritz Lang at the helm and the star power of Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Barbra Stanwyck, Edward G Robinson and Kirk Douglas is it any wonder that film noir movies ruled Hollywood during the 1940s and 1950s? They were often based on books by popular crime authors of the time (from what became known as the 'hardboiled' school of American detective and crime fiction), including Dashiell Hammet, Raymond Chandler, James M Cain and Cornell Woolrich.
QAGOMA's definition of film noir goes way beyond the classic period of the genre and includes some more recent films that invoke film noir's style, look and feel - what's commonly known as neo-noir. Examples include
The Usual Suspects, Chinatown and
LA Confidential. While there are some first-rate neo-noir movies on display here, purists like me prefer the classics from the genre's heyday - the ones filled with crackling dialogue, sizzling one-liners, memorable but conflicted characters, and performances by some of cinema's greats; the ones where the streets of Los Angeles and New York are stars of the show and the humour is as dark as those streets.
Movies screen on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The full program is available online here but here are my recommendations, including some of my all-time personal favourite movies.

$10 for adults, $8 for student/concession/child or $7 for QAGOMA members. 5-film package discounts are also available at the GOMA Box Office. Just ask.
Tickets are already on sale so what are you waiting for? You can purchase them
online here by clicking on your selection or they are available one hour prior to each session at the GOMA box office.
