It is hard to imagine anything quite as whimsical as flying a kite. Since the delightful idleness of the ditty in "Mary Poppins", the soaring image of a kite in full wind has been associated with beauty and childish innocence.
On Sunday 12 September, from 11am to 4pm, the
Bondi Pavilion will be overrun by vivid designs as kite enthusiasts converge for the
Festival of the Winds.
While the kite displays will undoubtedly dominate, with a display from the
Australian Kite Association, the Festival will range far beyond the outdoor activities. In the Front Colonnade of the Pavilion, for a price of $3, there will be a kite-making activity allowing the general public to design their own kites.
Joel Salom will be performing in the Amphitheatre. There is also an extensive concert program throughout the day. At 12.10pm, there will be a reggae performance of
Caribbean Soul and at 1.40pm martial arts, dance and acrobatics will collide in a display of Capoeira.
In the
Pavilion Forecourt, there will be performances ranging from Indigenous artists as well as traditional Mongolian singer
Bukhu. Throughout the day, there will be Free Kids' Activities including animal farm, leaping castle, Circus Solaris craft workshops.
In
Bondi Pavilion Gallery, a husband and wife duo will be presenting an exhibition entitled "In-flight (Project Another Country)". This exhibition will include an sculpture encapsulating the airborne spirit of the days festivities in the form of a large aeroplane.
After a day of kite flying and kite making, there will be ample opportunity to sample international food. Although, it may be tempting to stop in at one of Bondi Beach's various cafes and restaurants instead of braving the stalls.
