The Yarra flowed by at my feet. Behind me, a tree turned the sunlight into dappled patches of warmth that settled on my table. A padded cushion protected me from the chill of the marble seat and the coffee in front of me was good.

In a word: Feddish.

Feddish is nestled off to the side of Federation Square. It seems a little overwhelmed by the other eateries on the square, but in truth it has the best view of them all. The outside area provides a great viewpoint for watching the square, and inside has good views over the Yarra.

The section I was seated in gave me an uninterrupted view of our muddy river and the rowing sheds on the other bank. What I was really paying attention to, as always, was the state of the coffee. On ordering I had the usual pang I get at a new place – was it going to be drinkable? Would it satisfy my caffeine cravings, or just increase them?

I needn't have worried. My latte was more than drinkable. The waitresses knew how to let a person enjoy it as well, keeping well away until I clearly needed another drink.

I ventured an affogato but didn't explore the menu further. On a sunny day an espresso/icecream was sufficient. When I went in to pay I saw the display of one-person-sized cakes and was grateful I hadn't been tempted. Another time.

Feddish is a perfect place to sit and watch the city drift by. It's one of those places that fill up quickly on the weekend, so get in early or be prepared for a little wait. If you're travelling on a weekday, however, it's perfect for a nice relaxing afternoon.
