There is no substitute for fresh home-grown garden variety vegetables. Sure, there is the handy supermarket which accounts for the main grocery budget of most Australian families, but take a trip to the local Farmers Market in Melbourne and you are in for a treat.
Caulfield Farmers' Market is open every second Saturday from 8am to 1pm. Entry is $2 for adults, free for children. Parking is available, and so are accessible toilets.
This morning, the rain had just eased and the sun was shining through a day predicted to reach 20 degrees Celsius. It was 8am and not many people were around, however the crowds arrived shortly thereafter.
Stalls available:
A cake stand, farm-fresh cheeses, food for city animals, jams and preserves, smoked fish, meat, hand-made soaps, a chocolate pudding stand, hive-extracted honey, field-fresh mushrooms, ripe truss and cherry tomatoes, pestos, strawberries and cherries, home-made pies, oranges, an organic food stand, herbs, and more.
On the small hill situated behind the circular walk of tents and cars, was the main attraction for small children; a bouncy castle, and a fenced enclosure with roaming farm animals.
A few rabbits, chickens, geese, goats, and a black sheep were friendly enough for the kiddies to pat or chase after.
There is coffee available! A couple from Berwick makes the tastiest coffees with Australian-produced Devondale milk. However, if soy milk suits your taste, then soy is available as well.
Farmers Markets occur all throughout Australia, the movement began in 2003, with the idea of bringing farm-fresh produce to inner-city communities. Resellers, imported goods, and crafts are excluded, but fresh or home-made produce is what you will find.
