It might seem difficult to find kids' activities in this wet and frosty month, but there are a surprising number of great family-friendly events on this month –most of them free. This month is dominated by science and books.

Get wet at the Avon Descent
If the thought of strapping yourself into a small piece of plastic and hurtling through freezing cold water for hours on end makes you excited, then you should be front and centre as the competitors for the Avon Descent take to the course for this three day event. Even if it makes little sense to you, then you can still take the kids and have a fabulous time at one of the free race day family events along the course.

From the opening ceremony and fireworks in Northam on Friday evening, an International Food festival in Toodyay on Saturday to the finish line festivities in Bayswater on Sunday, you will find a multitude of great activities in a number of towns and parks along the way.

Free activities include BBQs, dance and music, bouncy castles, performers, face painters, food tastings, cuddly animals and balloon twisting. What more could you possibly ask for?

When: Friday 5th to Sunday 7th August, various times
Where: along the race course including Northam, Toodyay, Guildford, Ascot and Bayswater
Cost: Free

LOL on International Tell a Joke Day
Knock knock. Who's there? Europe. Europe who? You're a poo too!
This is one of my favourite jokes ever. And the kids love it, especially since it involves the word poo (but wee, bum or bottom are good too). Sigh. Lucky for us, August harbours International Tell a Joke Day. On this day, let them joke all they want, or share some of yours. Here is a link to some kid-friendly jokes.

When: Tuesday 16th August
