Do you remember when you loved to play? When getting upside down was par for the course? Do you recall when movement involved connecting with your friends, exploring boundaries, and experimenting with your sense of balance? Imagine a wide open space. You are in the presence of an energetic and enthusiastic movement teacher. You are playing, feeling really good in your body, and have a big smile on your face. And at some stage there could be a spot of Thai massage involved. Just because that feels good too.

Shira Yaziv grew up in Israel and now resides in California, where she cofounded Athletic Playground . I spoke with this creative trainer, and found a refreshing approach to artistic and expressive movement. Her view is that playfulness is accessible to people of all fitness levels, ages and backgrounds. Looking at the Athletic Playground's website already brings a smile to my face with their circus elements, playfulness, silliness, a little bit of theatre, dance, tumbling, and piggy back rides.

I asked Shira what her workshop might consist of. She responded, "Anything from movement preparation, floorwork, interactive improvisation, dynamic partnering, soft acrobatics and a big circle." It takes me back to the spontaneity and fun of my childhood. I remember climbing trees, practicing cartwheels, handstands, hoola hoops, jumping over things, and making up dance steps in the backyard with my cousins and friends.

What Shira Yaziv brings to the world of movement is a gift of enjoyment, inviting the adult world to reconnect. Many pioneering trainers and coaches recently have realised the immense benefit of being playful, flipping, challenging themselves in natural, more fluid ways that reflect the shapes of nature. Creating shapes with the body that are multi-dimensional. Accessing types of movement that require an integration of body, mind, emotions and friendships. The Athletic Playground was founded in 2008, around the same time the Energy Clinic opened here in Adelaide, which is where Shira brings her brand of fitness on Saturday 30th-Sunday 31st May .

Shira Yaziv has been guest teaching in Bondi, and Sydney, and at a camping retreat near Canberra, where she worked with Aussies Simon Thakur and Craig Mallett , whose styles hold similarities to 'Movement Playground', which will be presented at the Energy Clinic the weekend of May30-31. Shira is proficient in the art of Capoeira and has taught this form since a very young age. Her mentors have included world renowned Ido Portal . She believes anyone can participate in this workshop. "Workshops are accessible to everyone, no matter what is your movement discipline, experience and abilities. All you need is to be interested in participating."

Professionals like Shira and her peers know movement for everybody is essential. "Try new things until you find what you enjoy doing. Sometimes it is not about what you are doing but who you are doing it with. Prioritize time on your schedule to explore what is inspiring to you and keep trying new things." So get moving Adelaide. Your body will thank you.
