Due to the overwhelming interest in attending sporting and entertainment events in Melbourne, a new stadium was built and opened on 9 March 2000. It was then given the name Colonial Stadium. In 2002, the stadium was titled the Telstra Dome as it gained status as one of Melbourne's iconic landmarks. Unfortunately, the well-known Telstra Dome was renamed Etihad Stadium on March 2009 as the naming rights were handed-over to the Arab Emirates&gl=au&ei=W0LfTubcEoGciAe_49G1BQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=10&ved=0CIABEPIBMAk UAE owned Etihad Airways.

Etihad translates to 'United' in English.
